Children's Religious Education

The Unitarian Fellowship of Houston welcomes your children to its Religious Education Program. We value all children. Our program is an expression of our liberal religious faith that we value so highly.

Introducing our Director of Religious Education, Katy Carpman!
Originally a school teacher, Katy has been working on UU religious education programs for the past three years. Katy has lived in Houston for fourteen years and is mom to Joey and Brian who are 6 1/2. She and husband, Josh, are soon to celebrate their tenth anniversary. We are very excited to have Katy join our team!

You can contact Katy directly by sending an email to: ufhdre@comcast.net

We would love to have your children join our small, but growing group at the Fellowship on Sunday mornings. We meet for RE from ten to eleven on Sundays. Then our child care specialists supervise the preschoolers and small children as they watch films, play games, or explore the grounds during the service hour. The older children attend services sometimes, or work on a service project. The Youth group includes both Junior and Senior High School age kids, and the younger children are together in the Elementary School group.

Sharing our liberal religious tradition with the next generation is an important component of this congregation. Check out Religious Education classes for children and youth each Sunday at 10am!

On Sunday, August 22nd we had a great worship service, sharing memories
of our first days of school, our favorite teachers, and our current paths
and future dreams as learners.

Our task moving forward is to live up to our hopes as a community of learners – toward this we had Miracle Sunday – an opportunity for everyone to make a small commitment to the religious education program in one of the following positions –

o  Teaching a 1-2 week block of Faithful Journeys (see themes on back)
o  Coordinating a Special Event (see listing on back)
o  Supervising playground/game time (11:30-noon) twice this year
o  Working with middle and high school youth
o  Helping in the nursery (when there are babies!)
o  Joining the RE Committee
o  Being trained to facilitate an Adult OWL course (September 23-25)
o  Making sure my children are registered for RE!

Share my stories about the Fellowship and my experience as a UU

What was that? You’re so sad to have missed such a powerful service? You were really looking forward to making this commitment and just can’t stand the idea of waiting another whole year to have a chance? Well, never fear! We have more pledge cards! We’re more than happy to talk with you about hopes and dreams and we even have extra bubbles! And if you accidentally took your pledge card home, or needed to consult with your calendar? We’re definitely still taking them!

And do you want to know what everyone in the congregation still wants to learn? We’re assembling all those blue sticky-notes into a visual presentation available near the fireplace this Sunday – stop by and check it out.

What interests do you share? What knowledge could you pass on? What might make a good auction offering?

Two more weeks of summer programming -- we’ll start our “school year” on September 12th, which is also our annual Water Ceremony. Bring your water and the transformative stories of your summer!

The Religious Education Committee meets on September 9th at 7pm in the workroom – come be a part of our exciting energy!

In love and in faith,
Katy Carpman
Director of Religious Education

Our "Exceptional" UU Playground
Completing our vital Sunday School program is our child and adult-friendly, "Can't Wait to Frolic" playground. It is a playground developed by our UU fathers and mothers who lovingly planned its every detail, its safety, its eye-catching colors, its delightful fun and its expansiveness...expansiveness which spreads out into the Fellowship's beautiful natural lush green setting.

Children love it! Oh yes, and parents love it for their children.
