Children's Religious Education

The Unitarian Fellowship of Houston welcomes your children to its Religious Education Program. We value all children. Our program is an expression of our liberal religious faith that we value so highly.

Introducing our Director of Religious Education, Katy Carpman!
Originally a school teacher, Katy has been working on UU religious education programs for the past three years. Katy has lived in Houston for fourteen years and is mom to Joey and Brian who are 6 1/2. She and husband, Josh, are soon to celebrate their tenth anniversary. We are very excited to have Katy join our team!

You can contact Katy directly by sending an email to: ufhdre@comcast.net

We would love to have your children join our small, but growing group at the Fellowship on Sunday mornings. We meet for RE from ten to eleven on Sundays. Then our child care specialists supervise the preschoolers and small children as they watch films, play games, or explore the grounds during the service hour. The older children attend services sometimes, or work on a service project. The Youth group includes both Junior and Senior High School age kids, and the younger children are together in the Elementary School group.

Sharing our liberal religious tradition with the next generation is an important component of this congregation. Check out Religious Education classes for children and youth each Sunday at 10am!

I write this column on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.  It's the first time in my children's lives that the whole family won't be standing in line together, patiently waiting to cast our votes. And it feels more than a little weird. I think I may have to
walk them by our usual polling place this afternoon, so they can get some sort of feel for the concluding energy of this historic season. (Don't worry—I didn't FORGET to vote, but voted on a lunch break two weeks ago to avoid the mad crush—by standing in line for an hour. Oops.)

Regardless of where your political identity lies, it would be hard to deny that this has been an election season of a lot of feeling—of dedication and rededication, of becoming more inclusive, of standing up for something in a time of great uncertainty. People who have NEVER voted before or who haven't voted in years and years took the steps to register and to come to the polls. Both campaigns reached out, going door to door making sure that people knew the issues and knew how to let their voices be heard.

Wow. This is powerful stuff. Goosebumps. And so much of it hits on our Unitarian Universalist principles (which, truly, are reflective of some of the best ideals of the American tradition.) As the children sing--Each person is important. We're free to learn together and search for what is true. All people need a vote. Working for a peaceful world…(From the Do Re Mi UU Principles, originally penned by Carol Holst)

We have seen a similar energy at the Fellowship lately. Oodles and oodles of people on Sundays, a good influx of visitors, enthusiastic participants at our worship workshop, and an overflowing crowd at our annual Service Auction. May the good vibes
continue! May all of us embrace our true voices here and move our best ideals out into the world.

Thanks to all of you who stopped in last Sunday to share a snack and check out our new and improved classrooms! We are so pleased to finally be recovered from Hurricane Ike and really looking forward to starting our full slate of classes for the year.
Come check out the options this Sunday at 10am!

Celebrating Me and My World
: Fun learning experiences for preschool children.

Spirit of Adventure: A wide variety of activities and stories of famous UUs aimed at active elementary school children.

It's an exciting time for Children's RE at the Fellowship.

Come check us out!

Consider being a host to children or youth.

Yours in faith,

Our "Exceptional" UU Playground
Completing our vital Sunday School program is our child and adult-friendly, "Can't Wait to Frolic" playground. It is a playground developed by our UU fathers and mothers who lovingly planned its every detail, its safety, its eye-catching colors, its delightful fun and its expansiveness...expansiveness which spreads out into the Fellowship's beautiful natural lush green setting.

Children love it! Oh yes, and parents love it for their children.
